Our Amesbury School Athletics day is coming up this term on Tuesday 13 October (this is the first Tuesday back) at Newtown Park.
We will be leaving school by bus at 9:20am and returning just before 3pm. The whole school will be taking part in the athletics day. As this is part our school sports program, all students are expected to participate unless they have a specific reason not to.Students will need to bring:
- plenty of healthy food and water
- sunblock, school sunhat and polar fleece (Terms 1 and 4 are our summer terms, so students need to wear sunhats during outside activities)
- appropriate running clothes and running shoes (students are welcome to run in barefeet if they prefer, however just be aware that the running track can get quite hot; also students will not be allowed to run on the track in rugby or soccer boots and if they choose to run in spikes the spike length can be no more than 6mm)
- warm clothing and wet weather gear (just in case it is blowing a gale or the rain sets in)
For Year 4-6 students we use our athletics day to help us select the team to compete in the Northern Zone Athletics Day. For the throwing and jumping events, there are qualifying marks that students must reach in order to be considered. Selection in running races will be based on whether students will be competitive at Northern Zone. If for any reason your child is not able to compete at our athletics day, they will still be taken into consideration when selecting the team. Harakeke Hub have been regularly practicing athletics during Term 3, and so have a fair idea of what each student is capable of.
